Hi everyone, Kelly Hyman here! So, Joe Biden has been president for almost a month now. He certainly hit the ground running in terms of executive actions. Let’s take a look at President Biden’s first days in office and what he has done to address the most crucial issues facing the country right now.

COVID-19

One of President Biden’s first acts was to end the process of withdrawing from the World Health Organization. This reverses Trump’s disastrous decision to disengage from the WHO in the middle of a global pandemic. Biden also announced the appointment of a COVID-19 response coordinator, an official who will report directly to him. All Federal workers, and anyone entering Federal property, will be legally required to mask up and maintain social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Given the serious nature of the coronavirus crisis, these are highly welcome decisions.

Racial Justice

In President Biden’s first days in office, he also signed an executive order to end Trump’s propagandistic 1776 Commission. This launches an initiative to improve racial equity in the United States. He directed HUD to takes steps against discriminatory housing practices and signed a memorandum to fight racism against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Immigration

Biden began the process of undoing Trump’s xenophobic immigration policies. He signed executive orders to reunite migrant children separated from their parents, to reverse the ban on travel from Muslim countries, and to end the construction of Trump’s border wall. It will take a lot of work to undo all the damage Trump’s policies caused. Nevertheless, these are important first steps.

These are only a few of the executive orders Biden signed in his first month in office – he also ended the use of private prisons by the Justice Department, rejoined the Paris Climate Agreement, and directed Federal agencies to consult with tribal governments before making decisions that might affect them. All in all, Biden’s first month as president feels very hopeful after four years of Donald Trump. Join me here at Kelly Hyman’s Blog as we continue to follow the Biden presidency.
